Twentieth-century European carpets from France, Austria, Spain, Portugal and England, made between 1900 and 1960. Savonnerie and Art Deco weaving lead the group, and it includes carpets of the Wiener Werkstätte, the Viennese association founded in 1903 by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann and closed in 1932, which held that art should permeate every part of life and designed each object to belong to one scheme. Portuguese Arraiolos needlework and Spanish carpets are here too. These are the carpets of the century's design movements rather than of its traditions, and they were made in small numbers.
