Our antique Indian carpets date from the 1850s to the 1930s, with Agra weaving the largest group and Indo-Persian pieces beside it. Pile weaving came to India with the Mughals in the sixteenth century, and these later carpets continue that craftsmanship while absorbing the English taste of the period, a consequence of the British presence in India from the 1820s onward. It is that double inheritance, Mughal drawing loosened by European use, that makes them sit so easily in a modern room.
