NK:s Textilkammare was the textile department of Nordiska Kompaniet, the Stockholm department store, founded in 1936. From 1937 until 1971 it was led by Astrid Sampe, and under her it became the most internationally minded centre for modern textile design in Sweden.
The Textilkammare designed and commissioned furnishing fabrics, carpets and interiors, and drew in designers and architects from well beyond the store: Viola Gråsten and Stig Lindberg among the Swedes, and Arne Jacobsen from Denmark. Its influence ran as much through taste and argument as through the goods themselves, and its best known projects, such as the Linnelinjen series, set the terms for Swedish textiles at mid-century.
