Paul Haesaerts (1901-1974) was a Belgian art critic, architect, film-maker and designer, born at Boom and active in Brussels. He studied painting, architecture, law and philosophy, and worked across all of them: among his occupations he is recorded as a carpet designer, and Art Deco carpets to his design date from the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1930 he founded the journal Les Beaux-Arts with his brother Luc, and he belonged to both Les Compagnons de l'Art and La Jeune Peinture Belge. After the Second World War he turned to film as a means of art criticism; his short Visit to Picasso (1949) was awarded at the New York Film Festival in 1950 and nominated for a BAFTA the following year.
